For the second time this summer a baby has died after being left in a hot car by the mother in Indian River County.
Stephanie Ann Salvilla Werking, of the 100 block of Drake Way, was booked into the Indian River County Jail on Thursday afternoon, according to jail records. She was charged with manslaughter.
Werking told police she had driven to work in Vero Beach on July 24 and forgot to stop at a day care center to drop off her 6-month-old son, Gannon Werking, who was in the back seat. She discovered the boy's dead body in the car at the end of her work day, police said.
Fellsmere resident Alejandra Alvarado, 21, was charged on July 6 in the death of her 1-year old son, Aiden. Alvarado told the Indian River County Sheriff's Office she parked her SUV, with her son still in the back seat, at her business, a bait shop in Fellsmere, between 12:30 and 1 p.m. on June 13. She didn't notice her son was still in the car until 5 p.m., according to a warrant affidavit. Source: Sun Sentinel
Why does this keep happening? How can a parent "forget" their child is in the back seat of a car? This is four children in three months that have died from being left in hot cars. What is the solution? Will we need to have mandatory alarms to remind parents what they should be acutely aware of;t That there is a human being in the back seat of their car that is totally dependent on them to REMEMBER they are there.
I wonder how long before I'll be writing about another poor innocent baby who's mother or father was too busy to remember them. I hope it's a long long time.
